How to Not Be So Busy: A Guide for the Overworked and Overwhelmed
We all have those days where we feel overworked and overwhelmed, like we’re drowning in an endless sea of tasks and responsibilities.
But fear not, for I am here to provide you with some tips on how to not be so busy.
The Art of Slothing
My first suggestion is to embrace your inner sloth. We often equate being busy with being productive, but sometimes the best thing we can do is simply slow down and do nothing. So curl up with a blanket, binge-watch your favorite show, and embrace your inner sloth.
Even better is to take a nap. Napping has been scientifically proven to be one of the most effective ways to not be busy. Just close your eyes, take a deep breath, and let the world melt away for a few precious minutes.
Whatever you do, don’t go down the ‘should chute!’ ‘Shoulding’ is very unsloth-like!!
There is an art to being a first-class sloth. Sometimes the best way to not be busy is to simply have a lazy day. So why not sleep in, take a relaxing bath, and spend the day in your pajamas?
The Art of Procrastination
Procrastinate. This is a tried-and-true method for avoiding the demands of a busy life.
I have an inner voice that faithfully croons this theme song whenever I feel in danger of doing too much: “Why do today what you can put off until tomorrow?”
I recently wrote a whole article on the fine art of procrastination and you can read about that here.
I imagine you have your own methods for procrastination but if you would like a few more, give these a go:
- Try a new hobby. Doing something new and creative can be a great way to take a break from the busyness of life. So why not try pottery, knitting, or rock climbing? The possibilities are endless!
- Get lost in a good book. Whether it’s a gripping novel or a lighthearted romance, immersing yourself in a good story is a great way to forget about the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
- Play hookey. Sometimes, the best way to escape the busyness of life is to just take a day off. So why not call in sick, pack a bag, and head out on a spontaneous adventure?
Do something for your inner spirit
- Meditation is a great way to calm your mind and de-stress. I first learned to meditate about 25 years ago in an MBSR (mindfulness-based stress reduction) course I took at UMass Medical Center. (It is now offered online!) A simple way to begin is to find a quiet place, close your eyes, and focus on your breathing. You’ll be amazed at how much more relaxed you feel after just a few minutes.
- Practice mindfulness. Mindfulness is all about being present in the moment and not letting thoughts wander to the past or future. It’s a great way to de-stress and calm our minds, and can be as simple as focusing on our breathing for a few minutes a day.
- Get creative. I never considered myself a great artist – or writer- but drawing, painting, or writing, all tap into our creative side and are great ways to forget about the demands of life and just have fun.
Other Healthy Options
- I love to laugh! It is great medicine, and it’s also a great way to take a break from the demands of a busy life. So watch a funny movie, read a joke book, or my favorite, just hang out with friends who make you laugh.
- Go on a digital detox. In today’s fast-paced world, it’s all too easy to become addicted to our phones and other devices. But taking a break from the constant barrage of notifications and emails can do wonders for our mental health. So put down your phone, log out of social media, and enjoy some well-deserved time away from the screen.
- Get out into nature. Spending time in nature has been shown to have a calming effect on our minds and bodies. I like to walk around my neighborhood, stroll along a hiking path, or go for a bike ride (I use a recumbent bike known as a Teratryke). Just sitting to enjoy the beauty of the great outdoors works too!
Include People
- Volunteer.
Not only does volunteering allow us to help others, but it can also be a great way to take a break from the busyness of our own lives. I play my fiddle at church and serve on the Board of the Bangor Celtic Crossroads. I support several other local committees that help people who are marginalized. Why not find a local organization or cause that you’re passionate about and give back? - Call an old friend.
Talking to an old friend can be a great way to forget about the busyness of life and reminisce about old times. So pick up the phone and reconnect with someone you haven’t spoken to in a while. - Spend time with loved ones.
Spending time with loved ones is one of the most important things we can do to not be busy. Whether it’s having a movie night, cooking dinner together, or just taking a walk, spending time with those we care about is a great way to recharge and forget about the demands of everyday life.
When All Else Fails
Do something unexpected. Whether it’s booking a spontaneous trip or trying new and exciting food, doing something unexpected can be a great way to break out of our routine and forget about the busyness of life.
